Microsoft Office Server Reference

I spent a lot of time today trying to figure out why I couldn't create an instance of the Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.UserProfileManager class. In fact, when I used the object browser, it was as if half of the UserProfile namespace was missing.

I made a rookie mistake that I'll never make again. I guess this is the first time I've tried to write code that targets MOSS. I've written plenty of stuff that targets WSS V3 and plenty for Portal Server 2003, but Microsoft threw me a curve ball on this one.

You see, I referenced the wrong .dll in my project.

I clicked Add Reference.

I scrolled down passed all the Microsoft.Office components

Clear down to the Microsoft® Office SharePoint®Server components.

I found that the first one points at the most generic .dll (microsoft.sharepoint.portal.dll), so I referenced it.

It contained the proper namespace, just not the class I was looking for.

What I didn't realize was that there was another component called Microsoft Office Server component that points to Microsoft.Office.Server.dll

So if your looking at the list of components to register, keep this in mind:

A component named Microsoft<dot>Office.Server would fall in the middle of the list, right between Microsoft.Office.Interop and Microsoft.Office.Tools, but this component doesn't exist.

A component called Microsoft<trade mark>Office SharePoint®Server does exist and falls at the end of the list. It contains the namespace you want, but isn't really what you want.

What you want is the one called Microsoft<SPACE>Office Server, which is at the beginning of the list.

Good Luck!

PS. Microsoft: way to go on those naming standards. Maybe next time you could misspell "Microsoft" and throw us all for a loop.

Recycling Numbers

From the September/October, 2008 Issue of The Environment Magazine...

STEEL - Recycled steel and iron use 74% less energy than iron and steel made from raw materials.

Aluminum - Recycling aluminum uses 96% less energy than extracting it from virgin ore.

Paper - Recycled paper saves 36% of the energy that pulping trees would require. It also requires less chemicals to make.

Plastic - Making plastic from recycled material reduces the energy used by 80%. I know in my area, you can recycle almost any plastic. They take #1 - #6 and there is no sorting required.

Recycle Everything - No excuses.

What I'm... Reading

Well, finished reading actually. Nyck Flynn's memoir: Another Bullshit Night in Suck City

I'll flat out admit that I bought this book purely for the title. How can you pass by a book called Another Bullshit Night in Suck City and not buy it? Eventually, I even read it and I liked it, though it was not at all what I expected.

It's about the author's life and his relationship with his homeless father. It's a great read, both entertaining and eye opening.

Flynn does a fantastic job of sliding between well planned prose and stream of consciousness writing. Some of the stream of consciousness stuff is better than others. At one point he becomes playwright marking out a 10 page surreal drama between 5 Santas. The play takes place in his mind after finding that his father has been hired as a Salvation Army Santa. It was an interesting idea, but was just awful to read. I made it through about page 6 before skipping on. At another point, which I thought was genius, Flynn spends a chunk of his life in a drug and alcoholic stupor, stuck in the monotonous routine of a life going nowhere. However, Flynn doesn't come out and say that, instead he marks this time in the book with a 4 page chapter called same again. It starts off "The usual I say. Blood of Christ I say. Essence. Spirit. Medicine. A hint. A taste. a bump. A snort. I say top shelf. Straight up. Two fingers. A shot. a sip. A nip." And he goes on for 4 pages. It's an amazing collection of euphemisms about booze. In the context of the book, it was somewhat depressing, but I couldn't help thinking what a great set of posters this would have made in my college dorm.

Anyway, enough of a review. If you're in the bookstore and see a copy, buy it for the title. It looks great on a bookshelf. Then, eventually read it. You'll like it.

What I'm... pissed about:  XBox & Netflix deal is crap.

I had been looking forward a great deal to the Netflix streaming on the Xbox 360. Then today it caught my eye that this was only going to be for xbox owners that are Xbox Live GOLD subscribers, and that just makes me mad. I don't have the gold membership, I don't really have a need for it and I'm certainly not going to sign up just to get streaming access to Netflix - a service I already pay for. I don't get what either side has to gain by making this a gold subscription feature.

I guess I'll be sending my $30 to media mall for Play on. I'm already using the beta and it works great. I'm sure they'll be adding the HD streaming as soon as they can too.

New version of SPMail on Codeplex

I had a user report an issue with the version of SPMail that I had posted to Codeplex. I think I may have included a bad version of the indysockets .dll. I couldn't get it working with the new version of indysockets, so I flipped it over to another pop3 client from the code project NetPopMimeClient

You can grab the new, and now working, version at codeplex: http://www.codeplex.com/MyLocalBroadband/Wiki/View.aspx?title=SPMAIL
