Xbox Dead Nooooooo!!

Tried to fire up the 360 this weekend only to get a single red light accompanied by an onscreen E 74 error. The support page tells me to send it back for fixing @$99. I bought mine as a refurb about 18 months ago so it’s not covered under warranty. On the bright side, there’s no warranty to void, so I broke this thing down to the motherboard –twice. I’ve reset the heat sinks with no luck. Tonight I might try ‘baking’ it. I don’t want to. It sounds absurd to me that it would work, but I’ve been told first hand that it does work, so I’ll give it a try. I’ll let you know if it works.

A couple things struck me during the attempted fix:

  1. It’s really a pretty simple device inside. It’s pretty much just a motherboard, a dvd drive, some big heat sinks, and, oh yeah, a couple really loud fans.

It gets HOT. Yeah, you’ve heard the Xbox gets hot. I’ve heard the Xbox gets hot. But I was shocked at how hot it gets and how fast it gets that hot. These heat sings are enormous. One of them stands about 3-4 inches tall, the other is short, but has a secondary sink on a copper rod about 4 inches away. When I first saw them, I thought “How can these things overheat? It looks to me like they should be almost entirely passively cooled.” Then I started the thing up – You can feel the heat on the sinks after about 5 seconds and they will burn your hand after about 15-20 seconds. What the hell is going on in there? I’m not even playing a game at this point. How graphically or processor intensive is it to boot and display an error message? I’m no longer surprised that these things die. I’m surprised they aren’t bursting into flames.

XBOX Quick Tip

The XBOX 360 recognizes USB keyboards. I have a wireless keyboard with a USB receiver that I plugged in to my 360 this weekend and it worked great. The message interface kind of sucks, as it’s all a single for text entry and the online keyboard is displayed. On the other hand, it does look kind of cool when you rip through a message and the online keyboard looks like it’s trying to keep up.

I haven’t tried using it with any FPS games yet, but I’ll post back when I do.

What I’m… Wasting My Time On.

Goodbye, Fuuuker

Hello, ProfoundPayload

My Xbox gamer tag got hosed and after 3 tech support calls and a few emails, the final solution was to wipe it out and create a whole new gamer tag from scratch.

The back story is that I created Fuuuker when I got my Zune. It let me create it then and then it brought it over to the Xbox when I got my 360. Then a couple weeks ago they must have updated their profanity monitor and my tag got picked up then. When I logged into xbox live, I got a message that I had to change my tag. I didn’t have time then though, so I canceled it. The next time I logged into Zune’s site, I got a similar message. Since it’s easier to change it there on the PC, I did that – opting to go for Intranoggin.

That only changed it in half the system. Intranoggin showed up on xbox.com, but my 360 still reflected Fuuuker. I could still log in to xbox live from the console, but I was too nervous to put any money on the account from the PC and I wasn’t sure what name to give other gamers to add.

Part of the trouble shooting involved deleting my profile and associated content from the 360, so now I’m back to square 1.

Fuuuker is a pretty sweet looking avatar though, so ProfoundPayload may get a makeover.

What I’m… pissed about: XBox & Netflix deal is crap.

I had been looking forward a great deal to the Netflix streaming on the Xbox 360. Then today it caught my eye that this was only going to be for xbox owners that are Xbox Live GOLD subscribers, and that just makes me mad. I don’t have the gold membership, I don’t really have a need for it and I’m certainly not going to sign up just to get streaming access to Netflix – a service I already pay for. I don’t get what either side has to gain by making this a gold subscription feature.

I guess I’ll be sending my $30 to media mall for Play on. I’m already using the beta and it works great. I’m sure they’ll be adding the HD streaming as soon as they can too.

What I’m: wasting time on.

Isn’t she pretty.

1st order of business was to choose a gamer tag. I picked Fuuucker. It’s awesome, I know, but my wife doesn’t think it’s appropriate for the kids, what with my little one learning to read and all. So unless I can figure out how to display one name, but connect to Xbox live with another, I’ll be picking a new name soon.
